Actually, I think Walter Russell Mead has the best take on how America can go from decadent to deadly in about two seconds. Jacksonianism, with its imperative that the American people must be defended at all costs, irrespective of "world opinion", or "international law", or any other damn thing, is something that the totalitarians never get. Attack America, and you trigger a Jacksonian response that is simply not survivable. If you don't believe me, ask Tojo, Yamamoto, or Hitler...
